/v/ as in VERY /ˈvɛri/, OVER /ˈoʊvɚ/, and SAVE /seɪv/
PRONOUNCING /v/
UPPER TEETH: touch the lower lip (as for /f/)
AIRSTREAM: is continuous without interruption.
VOCAL CORDS: are vibrating.
The consonant sound /v/ does not exist in most dialects of Spanish.
POSSIBLE PRONUNCIATION PROBLEMS FOR THE SPANISH SPEAKER
The Spanish letter v is pronounced exactly like b (tuvo and tubo are pronounced the same). As a result, you probably substitute /b/ for /v/ when speaking English. This will greatly confuse your listeners!
EXAMPLES:
If you say /b/ instead of /v/:
very /ˈvɛri/ will sound like berry /ˈbɛri/
vest /vɛst/ will sound like best /bɛst/
When /v/ is the last sound in a word, many Spanish speakers forget to vibrate their vocal cords. This will make /v/ sound like /f/ and confuse your listeners.
EXAMPLES:
If you say /f/ instead of /v/:
save /seɪv/ will sound like safe /seɪf/
leave /liv/ will sound like leaf /lif/
The sound /v/ will be easy for you to say if you CONCENTRATE on placing your upper teeth over your bottom lip. LOOK IN THE MIRROR as you practice the /v/ exercises and remember to make your vocal cords vibrate. Your /v/ will be VERY good!
